Sinus Lift - Encinitas, CA
After a tooth is lost or extracted, the bone in the jaw naturally begins to shrink, or resorb, over time. The sinuses, without the bone to hold them in place, will begin to expand and occupy the empty space where the bone used to be. With insufficient bone to place a dental implant, bone grafting is necessary. However, with the sinuses out of place, a sinus lift may also be necessary.
Before the procedure begins, a local anesthetic is applied to the area. A small opening in the bone is then made, granting the doctor access to the sinus cavity. Using a small instrument, the doctor will then lift the sinus back to its original position. Grafting material is then placed beneath the newly raised sinus cavity along the existing bone. This grafting material will not only stimulate bone growth, but it will also hold the sinus cavity in its correct position.
After the Procedure
After the procedure, you will usually require 4-9 months to heal completely. After healing is complete, a dental implant can be placed in the site. The bone graft placed during the procedure should allow for enough bone density in the area to place one or many implants. Without the sinus lift procedure, placement of dental implants may not be possible.
